Plan for a greener Salt Lake and New Town

Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) as well as citizens' groups plan to increase greenery in Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat Gopalpur by planting trees and developing gardens.

On Sunday, the Salt Lake FC Block 'Abasik Samity' initiated a drive to plan 900 trees at the block's playground.

"This is the first time that we are taking such an initiative. Trees like neem and krishnachura will be planted," said block association assistant secretary Nilanjan Brahma.

With the elections over, BMC now plans to proceed with the initiatives of avenue plantation and taking care of big trees across Salt Lake. "We plan to distribute 15 saplings of small, medium and fruit-bearing trees to all the 41 councillors for plantation in their respective wards," said BMC MMIC (environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal.

In New Town, NKDA plans to engage agencies to conduct regular tree trimming and maintenance in all the three action areas. NGOs which have been adopting the green verges in New Town have also been assisting in this drive.
