Kolkata civic body to increase green cover by 5 times

KOLKATA: KMC member, mayor-in-council parks & gardens Debashis Kumar, who is representing Kolkata at COP-27, the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, said that the civic body plans to plant more trees, conserve water bodies and reduce vehicular pollution in Kolkata so that the city stays green and liveable for future generations.

“We will continue to focus on urban forestry, transition from vehicles driven by fossil fuels to electric vehicles and harness solar power to reduce pollution and improve the environment,” Kumar said. KMC has planted 75,000 trees this year and plans to increase the green cover from 4,500 sqm to 19,000 sqm in a year.
