Eco-friendly hsg societies: Where modern living merges with nature

Kolkata: Zero-waste living and energy efficiency are redefining urban lifestyles in New Town as housing societies embrace green initiatives to combat challenges of urbanisation. In this fast-developing part of the city, Siddha Happyville at Rajarhat Choumatha and One10 in Action Area-I are leading the charge towards sustainable living, competing to establish themselves as eco-friendly pioneers in a concrete jungle. Both complexes, each home to over 1,000 families, boast expansive green spaces — 60% open areas in Happyville and 70% in One10.

With thousands of trees planted each monsoon, these societies are not just nurturing greener spaces but also welcoming birds and diverse flora and fauna.

Zero-waste practices

at the core

One10’s commitment to zero-waste living is evident in its comprehensive approach. “Almost all kitchen waste is composted, and every effort is made to eliminate plastic use,” said Abu Saleque, president of One10’s Residents’ Welfare Association. “We also treat all sewage to produce potable water, which is used for landscaping and groundwater recharge,” added Dipankar Sarkar, another resident.

At Happyville, efforts to minimise landfill contributions are commendable. “We segregate waste at source, compost organic waste and recycle e-waste and plastic through designated channels,” said Tanmoy Chatterjee, a building administrator.

Energy efficiency

Happyville has integrated technology to optimise energy usage. “Our entire lighting system uses LEDs, and streetlights operate on timers. Solar power is used for heating, lighting and even feeding back into the grid,” said Sudipta Talukdar, a resident.

One10 mirrors this dedication, incorporating sensor-based systems in water pumps and tanks to prevent wastage. “Pumps automatically turn on or off depending on water levels,” said Partha Parida, a resident.

Water management

Rainwater harvesting remains a cornerstone in these housing complexes. “We don’t waste a single drop of water,” said Chatterjee of Happyville. One10 has also implemented efficient water use strategies, including plumbing systems with cartridges to reduce water consumption and recharge groundwater reserves.

Electric mobility

Both societies are making strides in promoting sustainable transport. Happyville has installed EV charging stations across parking areas to encourage residents to switch to electric vehicles. “We aim to make EVs the norm,” added Chatterjee.

Green urban living

Efforts of Happyville and One10 reflect a broader shift towards sustainable urban living. From composting and rainwater harvesting to promoting e-vehicles, these complexes are setting benchmarks in eco-friendly practices.
